DIY Landscape - The Basic Principles Of Landscape Design

Whether you plan on "borrowing ideas" or plan on creating your own landscaping design, you should have at the very least a basic understanding of the principles of landscape design.

This doesn't mean that you have to apply every principle to every part of your plan. But just having an understanding of these principles will help you generate ideas and increase your creativity.

Great landscaping lies in the eyes of the its creator. So, while the principles of landscape design are great guidelines to follow, don't feel like they're the "have to rules" of landscaping. Abstract and creativity are allowed.

The Principles of Landscape Design
# Unity should be one of your main goals in your design. It may be better understood and applied as consistency and repetition. Repetition creates unity by repeating alike elements like plants, plant groups, or decor throughout the landscape. Consistency creates unity in the sense that some or all of the different elements of the landscape fit together to create a whole.

Unity can be achieved by the consistency of character of elements in the design. By character, I mean the height, size, texture, color schemes, etc. of different elements.

A good example would be in the use of landscaping rocks and accent boulders. If you've ever seen a landscape design that had one large white round boulder here and another large red square granite boulder there and so on, then you've seen that unity wasn't created by this particular element.

This is just one example but the principle applies to all other elements such as groups of plants and materials.

A simple way to create unity in your landscape is by creating themes. And one of the simplest ways to create themes is by using a little garden decor. Creating a theme garden is easier when it's related to something you're interested in or have a passion for.

If you're into butterflies for instance, you could create a theme using plants that attract butterflies as well as using statues, ornaments, and other decor that are related to butterflies.

Unity should be expressed through at least one element in your landscape and preferably more. Using elements to express a main idea through consistent style and a specific theme is what creates harmony.
# Simplicity is actually one of the principles in design and art. It's one of the best guidelines you can follow as a beginner or do it yourselfer. Just keep things simple to begin with. You can do more later.

Simplicity in planting, for instance, would be to pick two or three colors and repeat them throughout the garden or landscape. Keeping decor to a minimum and within a specific theme as well as keeping hardscapes such as boulders consistent is also practicing simplicity.
# Balance in design is just as the word implies. A sense of equality. There are basically two types of balance in landscape design. Symmetrical and Asymmetrical.

Symmetrical balance is where there are more or less equally spaced matching elements of the garden design. With a garden equally divided, both sides could share all or part of the same shape, form, plant height, plant groupings, colors, bed shapes, theme, etc.

You may remember creating something like this when you were a kid in art class at school. Where you take a piece of paper, splash paint on it, fold it in half, unfold it, and then it magically creates an interesting symmetrical design. So symmetrical balance or design is somewhat of a mirror image or reflection.

Asymmetrical balance on the other hand is one of the principles of landscape design that's a little more complex. While textures, forms, colors, etc. may remain constant to create some unity, shapes and hardscapes may be more random. This form of balance often has separate or different themes with each having an equal but different type of attraction.

Asymmetrical may be better understood as actually being unbalanced, abstract, or free form while still creating unity and balance through the repetition of some elements.

A good example of this would be where bed shapes or paths differ on both sides of the landscape dividing line while still sharing some of the same elements and plants. One side could be curved with a sense of flow while the other side is straight, direct, hard, and completely opposite. Again, unity and balance will be created through other elements.

Contrast can be very interesting and this type of form can create a neat contrast. Flowing lines are pleasing to the eye but the bold contrast of a curve combined with a straight line can be very interesting.

Asymmetrical balance isn't dependant on the shape of your garden. It can be but generally it's not.

An example might be where one side of the garden is mostly large shade trees while the other side is predominately a lower growing flower garden or even a mix of both examples. Like I stated earlier, the landscaping can be abstract while still maintaining unity through other elements such as rocks, plants, and decor.

Contrast and harmony can also be achieved using plants. Fine foliage verses coarser foliage, round leaves verses spiked leaves as well as color compliments and contrasts.

Plant height, color, and texture may be varied from one area to the next but each area should stay consistent within its own theme.

You'll hear me talk about "themes" a lot. Many successful do-it-yourself designs follow a basic theme to achieve most of the principles of landscape design described on this page. The proper use of plants (see plant selection)or garden decor or a mix of both is a simple way to achieve themes.

DIY Landscape - Planning Your Patio on a Budget

Planning and building beautiful and functional patios, like most areas of landscaping and garden design, does not have to be expensive. Of course, the source and type of materials you use for your patio will determine the biggest part of the cost. And of course, the term “budget” generally assumes that you will do the labor yourself so that is not an issue here.

Before you can get any ideas of cost of creating your patio, you’ll need ideas, plans, and a direction to go in. And if you’re familiar with this site, you know I’ve provided you with lots of pictures to look at for ideas. Oh ya. So spend a little time at the gallery of Patio design and decorating ideas to get an idea of all your options and possibilities.

For now, don’t get too hung up on the furnishings and decor but pay more attention to the design styles and elements used. While they don’t have to be, the furnishings may be the most costly of all the elements you add so it’s best to see where you’re at with expenses before you plan any of that in. And remember, “budget” means that you’ll be doing the labor yourself so there won’t be much expense there. Or at most, a barbeque and a few beers for your friends…at the end of the day.

While style, shape, and design ideas can be gathered through the pictures in the directories, knowing a few principles in the area of small gardens will go a long way. Because generally, most patios will tend to be smaller and in line with courtyards and small gardens.

Assuming an area for the patio has been chosen, I would normally start from the ground up. So deciding on flooring materials is the first step. Your choices range from inexpensive gravel or crusher fines to pavers and flagstone to decorative concrete ideas. Get an idea of the sources, availability, and cost of your flooring choice and see if it fits into your budget plan.

Generally, pavers and natural flagstone make up the majority of flooring materials used with natural flagstone being the least expensive and easiest to install. Often, these materials can be found as discarded from refurbished projects. And depending on where you live, the flagstone may be gathered in the field with a permit from your county or state. And old used pavers are one of my favorite materials for patio floors as the worn look makes them look so established and rustic.

If plants are an inclusion into your patio plans, there are a lot of ways to save money in choosing landscaping and garden plants. Starting with smaller plants and even using native plants will help stay within the budget.

Now, beyond everything we’ve discussed here, there is the consideration of various placements of garden decor, wall hangings, colors, and furnishings. And with a little creativity, many of these can be free. See garden decor for some cheap and free decor ideas for gardens, landscaping, patios, and courtyards.

If you’ve planned ahead and taken your time in finding the right materials to this point, you may just have enough left in your budget to finish your patio or small garden courtyard just the way you envision it.

DIY Landscape - Going Green Tips

Going green tips image.

Going green tips and ideas. There are literally thousands of green living practices that can be applied to our daily lives. Do a search for anything green and the results are overwhelming. You’ll see things like “how to build a wind generator” or “how to create solar panels”, “how to make your own cleaning solutions”, or “how to build an electric car that runs on batteries”. Still, as I look around me, I don’t see much of this going on and I only see a few other eco tips and ideas that are actually being practiced.

So, from a realistic point of view, what are the top ten eco-green principles that are actually being practiced….., at least in my own city? While I’m sure that bigger cities are creating more awareness because of necessity, the stats are probably still close to the same. While eventually we will all be forced to observe all the fine details of living a green lifestyle, there are a few practices that are becoming a common part of everyday life. Besides being easy to add to our lives and routines, a few of these practices are the result of forced awareness and implementation which is why they’ve become common.

These are the top ten going green tips that I’ve actually seen folks practicing around me. They’re simple and so an easy way to get started doing your part.

  • Reusable Grocery Bags
  • Often made of recycled materials themselves, reusable grocery bags are available at the checkout counter of every store or thrift shop. My church even has their own branded bag for a two dollar fee (that goes to a good cause, of course). As plastic bags dot the landscape like a weed infestation, reusable grocery bags are a great idea…..if you can remember to put them back in the car so you’ll have them when you need them.

  • Pay Bills Online Or Direct Draft
  • If you’re not taking advantage of this, you’re wasting a lot of time, money, and resources that you don’t have to. Seriously. This isn’t new anymore so there’s no reason to be afraid of it. It’s been tested. So use it to free up some time as well as save energy and money.

  • Disposable Plastic Water Bottles
  • These are as non-green as you can get. Besides filling our landfills with a mass of materials that never break down, disposable plastic water bottles are also a health issue due to chemicals that leech from this thin type of plastic into the water. Get a good quality reusable water bottle and an inexpensive filter for your sink. You’ll save a ton of money, help the environment, and reduce one more risk to your health.

  • Water Rationing
  • Nobody likes this one and most communities have to have forced water restrictions to maintain water levels that will sustain the basic needs of communities. Green lawns are a luxury and not a necessity. Do your part. Also, see Xeriscaping below.

  • Using Renewable Energy
  • Wind, sun, and bio-diesel are just a few of the most visible types of renewable green energy being used today. Eventually, there will be no choice. While these may not be highly visible in my area, they are visible all around us. Sign up for it and use it where you can. Wikipedia has an in depth explanation and definition of renewable energy here.

  • Lighting
  • CFL (compact fluorescent lamps) lighting took a while to catch on but is quickly replacing most common light bulbs in homes as well as shelf space in the stores. In the near future we should see LED (Light Emitting Diode) lighting become even more widely used than CFL as they are even more green and energy efficient. This is an easy transition. Next time you’re at the store, pick up some CFL or LED lights instead of incandescent bulbs. As the old bulbs burn out, replace them one at a time until you make the transition. Of course, you can also change them all at once as well.

  • Xeriscaping – Water Wise Landscaping
  • I know a little bit about this one and it ain’t what you think folks. Xeriscaping, not zero scaping, can be applied to almost any garden design style and landscaping. Of course, since it was developed and is most widely used in the Desert Southwest, most folks relate to Xeriscaping as the Desert landscaping style of rocks and cactus. Educate yourself on this one. See xeriscaping principles for explanations, examples, and ideas for xeriscape landscape design.

  • Working At Home
  • While there are a lot of reasons for this one, working, freelancing, and contracting from home is becoming much more common. Regardless of reason or intent, it does save energy from travel, lessens the need for more building, and for heating, lighting, and cooling large office buildings.

  • Email
  • Betcha don’t even think about how much energy and resources you save every time you replace a snail mail with an email. Of course, you’re not helping any of the postal services but you are saving trees and energy resources. Reassess your contacts and business and use email every time you can.

  • Carpool
  • This one has been around since the “energy crisis”. And even though you don’t hear much of it anymore, it’s still widely practiced by smart folk. I can see it a bit in the industry around our little city and every time I go to a county fair or picture show in a big city, I see lots of folks still using the carpool lanes.

Of course within the scope of our site, there are a lot of sites that specifically deal with green landscaping and gardening. See green gardening advice and ideas for some tips and resources that may help you move the green movement into your own yard and landscaping.

Again, these may not be the top ten going green tips on the national or even global scale. They are simply but a few of the many thousands that I see folks actually doing. And also again, they are common mostly because they are easy to fit into our own lifestyles. They are an easy way to do your part for your community and environment. Do your part.

DIY Landscape - Going Green Gardening Advice Ideas

Considering my line of work, it’s hard to admit that I haven’t quite caught on to the going green ideas of a sustainable living lifestyle. Too busy or simply just not concerned enough to be environmentally responsible? Oh, I don’t know. Still, I don’t think anyone has a valid excuse for not doing their part to preserve and restore this world. So…better late than never…I always say.

Now, I’m not completely out of the loop. I’ve prepared a lot of landscaping designs, ideas, and consultations for clients that focus on sustainability, preserving natural resources, and xeriscaping practices. And while I may be doing a small part, still it’s just a fraction of how we can apply green living to almost every aspect of our lives. And the more I look into it, the bigger it gets. I’m fascinated with some of the ideas. Yes, living green and environmentally responsible goes way beyond simply hanging your clothes out to dry and keeping the windows in your car rolled up for better gas mileage.

Green Gardening And Landscaping

What exactly does that mean? Green landscaping and gardening? I know some folks are sayin’ “Isn’t all gardening…..green?”. Maybe we just need a definition of sustainability and “green”. My own first thought was 100% organic and it’s even beyond that.

While going green applies to all areas of our lives, I thought I would keep this post within the realm of sustainable and green gardening and landscaping. There’s simply too much concerning environmental responsibility to fit into one category. There will be plenty of ideas for me to write about next week.

In my own quest to be informed, and after sifting through a few thousand blogs on the subject, I’ve saved back a few that are really exceptional. These blogs are captivating and entertaining as well as informative. You’re gonna want to bookmark ‘em.

Green Gardenista
This is actually the first one I found worth reading. I spent quite a bit of time here.

Sustainable Gardening
I think these folks have braggin’ rights to to their name.

Gardening Nude
While the name of this blog might get you there, the content and information will keep you there.

Earth Wise Life Wise
A little more than landscaping and gardening. This site will get you thinking in a lot of different directions.

This should keep you reading for a while. Like I said, there’s a lot more about living a green environmentally responsible lifestyle than gardening and landscaping. And at least for the next few weeks we’ll explore this as well as topics like renewable energy and things inside the home. I’m looking forward to learning, practicing and writing more about it.

DIY Landscape - Outdoor Christmas Lawn Decorations

christmasyard1

Some of the outdoor Christmas yard decorations of today are absolutely fascinating. Along with the traditional lights and a little imagination, some of the new computer animated Christmas lawn decorations have become elaborate to the point of needing blueprints and a crew to install them. Seriously, installing some of these new light displays and decor has gone way beyond the average homeowner installation of hanging lights on the eaves of our homes.

For the most part, the average displays are homeowner do-able. However, as you’ll see in the new directory Christmas Yard Decorating Ideas, some can take quite a few materials and planning to put together. Generally, you can purchase complete kits and displays or simply buy all the materials and build your own ideas and displays.

My own fascination with Christmas yard decorations comes honestly as I live in a town that makes a big deal of it. Christmas On The Pecos in Carlsbad, NM has become a huge attraction that is often sold out way in advance. From its simple beginning in 1992 until now, the Christmas light displays from over 100 homes participating continually get bigger and better with each year. With the help of the digital age, holiday lighting and outdoor decorating, like everything else, ain’t what it use to be.

Christmas Decorating Ideas

What you need now are some ideas and pictures to look at for inspiration. We’ve done the leg work for you again. With a little research and surfing, we’ve created a fairly good database of ideas, pictures, and resources.

DIY Landscape - Surface Roots

Mature tree roots growing on or just below the soils surface are known as surface roots or top roots. And many times due to growing conditions, growth habits, and even the genetics of the tree, surface roots can’t be prevented. So along with a little prevention like planting trees that are less susceptible to surface roots, proper watering, and soil management, it’s just as helpful to know what to do when and if your trees start to top root.

Aside from genetics, poor soil conditions are usually the main cause of surface roots. While compacted soil is the problem in most cases, the presence of toxins, low oxygen, and too much or not enough water are also causes. Deep watering may or may not make a difference in some cases. If so, it’s most likely due to the water keeping the deeper soil loosened. Regardless, trees and most plants like infrequent deep watering rather than frequent shallow watering so this should be common practice anyway. Again, it may or may not make a difference.

While trees do send out tap roots for stability and some roots deeper for moisture and feeding, most feeder roots grow at the surface few inches of soil. And just as the trunk and the branches of the tree grow wider as they get older, so do the roots. So eventually, some of these shallow older roots will naturally grow out of the soil. Sometimes the roots will also become visible because of erosion of the surface soil.

Once the roots appear on the surface, there is little that can be done to get rid of them without hurting the tree. You can possibly prune off the visible roots but the damage to the cut roots and the fine feeder roots surrounding the area can harm or even kill the tree. Pruning the roots should be limited to situations where the roots are breaking foundations, sidewalks, driveways, and anything they shouldn’t be.

There are a few common approaches to “dressing up” top root areas. However, due to these surface roots becoming like hardwood as they grow out of the soil, you have to be careful covering them or they could possibly get a fungus, disease, or rot. The best cover is a few inches of course mulch or bark chunks. Finer mulches are usually o.k. but don’t allow as much air circulation around the roots.

Be creative. Build a small retaining wall or edging around the area to contain the mulch and create a planting bed. Add some ground cover plants and the problem disappears while adding a new dimension to your yard and landscape.

One last thing. While I have also seen a few instances where the areas were successfully filled over with good soil and replanted or sodded, I don’t personally advise it. Just as burying a trunk of a tree can cause the outer surface bark to become soaked, soft, weak, and diseased, it can also have the same effect on the hardwood bark of the surface roots. And if it does work it’s usually only temporary as eventually the roots grow to the top surface again.

DIY Landscape - The Beauty of Landscaping

In architecture, landscaping refers to the science and art of modifying land areas by organizing natural, cultivated, or constructed elements according to a comprehensive, aesthetic plan.
This landscaping involves the elements of topographical features like hills, valleys, rivers, and ponds or growing things like trees, shrubs, grass, and flowers as well as constructions like buildings, terraces, and fountains.

Today, landscaping is quite popular for homeowners who would want to improve their homes. The goal should be the house and the landscaping must complement with each other.

A GUIDE TO D-I-Y LANDSCAPING

Any house with landscape should complement each other. In order to achieve this harmony, you really need to consider and reconsider your options and the extent of landscaping you would want to have.

There are actually so many aspects in do-it-yourself landscaping like budget, skills, the climate of your region or place, personal design tastes, and the available resources. If you really want to beautify your home through landscaping, here are some do-it-yourself landscaping tips that can help you get by.

1. Make sure that you provide your landscaping with a year-round theme. The surefire tip in landscaping is to provide it something related to four seasons so you'll never be outdated. A combination of a plant-selection with flowering trees or shrubs throughout, and fall foliage would do.

2. Try to layer the garden's flower beds when planting. By layering the planting beds in rows of three that include a back row filled with tall plants, a middle row planted with the next tallest plants, and a front row containing the shortest plants. The repetition of each flower bedding will give your garden a unified look.

3. Consider the use of evergreens for continuity. When it comes to DIY landscaping usually focuses more on trees and shrubs but this doesn't mean that you cannot include evergreens because this will give the space more structure and the view of variety and continuity.

4. Experiment on using annuals to supplement perennial hues and colors. Perennial flowers are ideal for flower beds because they last for a long period of time. But since they bloom only in a specific period, it is best if you try incorporating annual plants with perennial ones so you can fill up the colorless spots in the flower beds when perennial flowers are not yet in bloom.

If you are quite particular about color coordination of the two kinds of blooms, try using a picture gallery so you'll get ideas what is the right color scheme for your garden.

5. Don't forget to assimilate hardscape into your initial and final landscape design. Aside from paying much attention to plants when landscaping, don't forget to include hardscape features such as fences and other garden decorations.

If you want to be more specific, try including patios and decks to your garden because these will provide great transition from your indoors to your outdoors.

6. Don't be daunted in installing water features. One of the best focal points of any excellent landscape designs is the water feature. Aside from being one of the hottest trends in landscaping today, installing a water feature will not only make your garden more visually appealing but it can only create soothing sounds great for relaxation. The most basic water feature you can install is ponds.

When you think you're ready to do something bigger and better, consider conceptualizing a simple waterfall through the use of cheap fountains, flexible tubing, pre-formed rigid plastic liners, and durable pumps.

7. Always keep foliages and drought-tolerant plants in mind. When thinking of landscaping your house or garden, never forget to include the characteristics of a plant's foliage. The varying foliage textures and colors are needed to help you liven up your yard while the presence of drought-tolerant plants so your garden will have a staple decoration.

8. Lastly, make sure that you can maintain your yard without so much hassle. Sure, you can do landscaping in your yard based on your taste and aesthetic sense, but never forget to keep it low-maintenance so you can enjoy the beauty of your work even if you don't spend much time and money keeping it.

DIY Landscape - Critical Landscaping Ideas When Designing For a Small Area

Not all homes have estate-sized yards. In fact smaller yards, say under than 10 square meters, are far more common and they can still be transformed into a landscaping showpiece with some good landscaping ideas.

If you plan a DIY (do it yourself) landscaping project, then take some time planning before putting shovel to dirt. Do a little research by exploring design ideas online or from your favorite landscaping magazines. Choose the landscaping ideas that inspire you the most and then find ways to integrate the different elements with each other in such a way to make a cohesive design. DIY Landscaping usually works best if you have a great eye for coordination and design.

Small Spaces

In small spaces clutter becomes enemy number one. So plant choice becomes the linchpin to a fun and functional design. The plants you choose should be selected based on what your end goal is. Also elements such as color and size should fit well with the design elements you discovered in your online and magazine research. Also make sure to give serious consideration to how fast plants grow. A small space can get cluttered very quickly s be wise and choose slow growth pants. These kinds of plants will keep your small space open and clean while freeing you from endless hours of pruning and trimming.

Some great choices that fit these requirements are plants like Carissa and Privet. These plants have a slow growth rate and they retain their shape quite well for up to a few years. Other great choices for small spaces are small slow growing bushes like Pistacia Pittosporum, Myrtle and Nandin.

Water Feature Landscaping Ideas

Having a beautiful water feature is almost always a great choice to bring soothing fresh appeal into an outdoor space. While the size of the feature is important, don't think that you cannot use larger design elements such as fountains, waterfalls and even small ponds.

If you want to have a prominent water feature then you will want to position it in such a way as to not overwhelm the space. For instance placing waterfalls in a corner allows it to be feature yet out of pathways and open space. If corner space is occupied then consider building your waterfall directly into a wall with a rock formation fanning out to the ground. Such design tricks will allow you to have the features you want without intruding into precious center space.

And these types of water features are often easier to build than at first believed, some of them come pre-fabricated. It is simply a matter of unpacking a small ceramic basin or bowl and then placed in a well chose spot.

These landscaping ideas are great for many types of small spaces, and they take very little time and effort to complete yet they can add huge visual impact.

Regardless of what landscaping ideas you come up with it will be best to draw out a landscaping plan showing in detail where things will go and how much space they will take up. This type of planning will help you be more organized, and it will help you to think through the small but important details like where to put water sources and where to place electrical outlets.

DIY Landscape - Vibrantly Colored Flowers!

Generally, we don't think of flowers as an accessory when it comes to lawn care. However, when showcasing a magnificent lawn what better way to accomplish this than to use bright, colorful flowers. And, knowing how to care for your flowers is just as important as knowing how to grow a lush, green lawn.

Here are five simple tips that can keep those flowers blooming and healthy:

1. Don't Skip the Basics
As simple as it may seem, you might be surprised to know that people will spend a lot of money and time buying the flowers and planting while basically skipping the basics that will keep the plants thriving and flowering. So, the flowers have to have fertile soil. A county extension agent (look under government in the telephone directory) can help you. They can test the soil and give you direction on how much and what kind of fertilizer you need.

After taking care of the soil, your plants will need water and sunlight. Watering is generally not a problem, but sunlight could be if you planted them in or around bushes or a shaded area. Keep that in mind when deciding on a location.

If you're planting bulbs you must plant them at the correct depth. The package instructions will give you the details. If you're planting perennials and shrubs, be careful you don't have the mulch and soil all the way to the stem. The plant needs space to keep from overheating and also room for the water to sink in and not runoff.

2. Add Variety
Some folks like to plant just perennials so they don't have to keep planting flowers each year. You can still do this, of course, but by adding a variety of annuals you can make your flowering plants visually appealing by having continuous, colorful blooms.

3. Deadheading
Deadheading is pretty much just like it sounds -- cutting the flower head off after it has wilted. This encourages the plant to produce more flowers; however, don't get lazy and let the deadhead fall to the ground by the plants. Very bad move. Plant diseases and mildew may end up attacking and destroying your plant. You lose not only the plant itself, but money and time you put into planting in the first place.

4. Bugs
You may like them or you may not like them, but understand this -- you do need them! The problem is most people don't know the good from the bad so they end up killing the good ones which open the door for the bad. Keep in mind that most insects in your garden are good. The pollinators for instance are the bees, beetles and butterflies which fertilize plants by transferring pollen from one plant to another. This may not make your day, but in order to survive about 80% of flowering plants need the insects.

Other insects, bacteria, fungi and microorganisms are part of the decomposition process of dead plant material. This is important because it enriches the soil by putting nutrients back where it will be needed and used by growing plants. Sow bugs and dung beetles are insects involved in this important process.

Nature has a way of providing us with checks and balances, unfortunately, we have a way of messing it up because we don't know what we are doing. There are insects that do damage, like aphids, but there are other insects like dragonflies and lacewings that act as natural predators to these destructive insects.

Sure, things can get out of control and we need to step in and help nature out, just make sure you get expert advice on what kind of insects are involved and the best way to take care of the problem. When it comes to pesticides, think "environmentally safe".

5. Fertilizer
Like everything else in your yard, your plants may need fertilizing also. Always remember, read the directions on the container. More is not better when it comes to fertilizing your lawn or your flowers.

You have five simple tips to help showcase your lawn with exciting, colorful flowers. As with anything, it may take a little more work but the results will be well with it.

DIY Landscape - Landscaping Thoughts

Let's imagine you go to meet a business client at their house, and as you approach the house you notice that although the house is quite nice, all the grass is brown and dead, there are no trees, shrubs, or any type of plants or decorations in the yard. Regardless of how nice the house is on the inside, you will forever be biased because of the complete lack of landscaping and yard maintenance. You can begin planning your landscaping as soon as you have a lot selected and find the house plans you want.

1. You don't have to be an expert to make landscaping improvements
2. You don't have to hire an expert either.

Theme - It is important to begin with an overall theme or scene you want to depict. This should be the basis of your landscaping project. You don't have to have everything all at once; you can always build more layers into the theme as you go.

Transition - With regard to plants, a general rule is to lead the eye from smaller, delicate plants to larger ones, with a few variations in between. Transitioning gradually from one color range to another is also effective.

Fit - You should make sure that whatever you decide to do, that it is not overwhelming to the overall feel of your area. A coy pond for example is a very nice addition in the right circumstances, but not if it takes up your entire yard. The same applies to any other large concept, like a rock garden, flower bed, etc. Just make sure that it doesn't feel crowded. It is easier and cheaper to add more things later as you decide you need them than to try to start with too much.

There are many things to consider before getting started, and some good resources can be found online.

Here’s a austere solution: Brеаk up уουr scrap іntο “рƖасе tο stay” аnԁ alter one room each year. Thіѕ іѕ mainly helpful іf уου’re οn a budget. Yου’re results wіƖƖ bе much surpass іf уου spend аѕ much time аnԁ cash аѕ уου саn οn one machinate, rаthеr thаn tiresome tο give a face-lift thе entire scrap аƖƖ аt once fοr thе same quantity οf cash.

Even іf уου’re landscaping οnƖу one section οf thе yard аt a time, уου still need аn bу аnԁ large рƖοt. Bу chart document, sketch out thе stable structures οn уουr property counting thе household, out buildings, deck аnԁ trees.

Thіѕ іѕ аƖѕο a ехсеƖƖеnt time tο consider whісh existing plants аnԁ undergrowth won’t bе a раrt οf thе nеw landscape.

Mаkе copies οf уουr sketch аnԁ conduct experiment wіth different designs. Incorporate thουɡhtѕ уου Ɩіkе frοm magazines οr gardens уου’ve visited.

If уου host frequent cook outs уου’ll probably want tο keep thе yard open аnԁ sow along thе borders. If уου don’t need thе interval, уου сουƖԁ initiation real drama wіth аn island bed, walkways, solar lighting аnԁ cutouts fοr comfortable furniture tο relax οn.

Here аrе ѕοmе thουɡhtѕ уου’ll dig:

Screening wіth Plants

If уουr yard doesn’t hаνе a fence, уου force want tο consider planting a row οf hawthorn, juniper, arborvitae, οr a amalgamation οf thеѕе bushes tο initiation privacy аnԁ grant a backdrop fοr future flower beds. A strategically рƖасе evergreen screen wіƖƖ аƖѕο grant a windbreak frοm chill winds аnԁ nomadic snow.

PƖοttіnɡ a Border Flower Bed

Thе toughest раrt οf crafty a border іѕ choosing flowers thаt complement each οthеr both іn affect аnԁ height. Thе list οf perennials I recommend here іѕ fοr a six foot wide bed іn a mainly sunny circumstances. Wide, іn thіѕ case, means external frοm thе sow screen οr fence, nοt thе length οf thе bed.

Uѕе 3 οr 5 plants fοr each kind οf flower аnԁ allocate 16”–18” between each sow. Allocate 20”–22” between thе different sow groups. Planting аn odd digit οf plants іѕ more visually appealing thаn аn even digit.

Allocate ample interval аt thе rear οf thе bed fοr door. Thіѕ wіƖƖ аƖѕο prevent choking οff de rigueur air аnԁ set alight frοm thе plants іn back.

Thеѕе аrе mу suggestions fοr a stable border. Thеу wеrе chosen tο give a long spectacle, wіth thе first flowers appearing іn April аnԁ thе last іn October.

Tall plants fοr thе back row: SEDUM ‘Autumn Joy’; RUDBECKIA Goldsturm; PHLOX White; IRIS set alight blue οr yellow; VERONICA Blue; SOLIDAGO ‘hοnеѕt Shower’; аnԁ HOSTA fortunei ‘Picta’.

Shorter plants fοr thе adjoin row: GERANIUM grandiflorum; POTENTILLA ‘Firedance’; HUECHERA Pink; ASTER Dwarf Blue; SEDUM Dragons Blood; ACHILLEA ‘Moonshine’; аnԁ ERIGERON ‘Accomplishment’.

Obviously, thеѕе plants won’t bе thе best extent fοr еνеrу climate. A worthwhile book tο hеƖр уου top out plants native tο уουr climate zone іѕ Thе Comfortable Bοnе іԁƖе Backyard. It’s аƖѕο аn brilliant reference fοr beginning gardeners.

DIY Landscap Design - Well Balanced Home Landscaping Part 1.

Balance іѕ a principle οf аƖƖ art forms, top, аnԁ even landscape top. It implies a implication οf equality. Anԁ whіƖе here mау bе јυѕt a modest more tο іt, thіѕ іѕ hοw I give reasons fοr іt tο mаkе іt simpler fοr first timers аnԁ ԁο іt yourselfers tο bе wіth уου.

A backyard, landscape, οr аnу form οf equal proportions wουƖԁ genuinely feel аnԁ look balanced. Even іf, mοѕt gardens аnԁ landscapes аrе nοt exact οr equal іn shape аnԁ form. Thеу’re asymmetrical аnԁ abstract іn form аnԁ аrе evenly lacking аnу untreated balance οf thеіr οwn. Sο landscaping evenly relies οn οthеr elements tο initiation balance аnԁ harmony owing tο unity.

Many era, a lack οf balance іѕ frankly correlated tο a lack οf repetition. Repeating alike elements such аѕ plants οr rocks rіɡht through thе landscape wіƖƖ hеƖр unify different areas tο each οthеr. Aѕ modest аѕ one repeated matching sow assemble, affect, piece οf gear, οr hardscape саn accomplish thіѕ.

A lack οf balance іѕ аƖѕο produced bу introduction tοο many οr аƖƖ non matching elements rіɡht through a landscape top. Thіѕ саn sometimes seem muddled аnԁ unkept whеn іt grows іn. In thе beginning οf уουr top, рƖοt fοr less, рƖасе јυѕt a few matching sow groups rіɡht through thе backyard, аnԁ keep gear matching аnԁ tο a minimum. Yου саn add more before long.

Sο many οf thе qυеѕtіοnѕ thаt I hear аbουt landscape top deal wіth thе shape οf a top . Shape іѕ οnƖу one οf іtѕ kind tο each top аnԁ wіƖƖ ultimately follow аƖƖ de rigueur paths аnԁ уουr visions. Even іf, аnу shape οr form саn bе filled wіth elements аnԁ still bе аnу ԁυƖƖ, void, loud, muddled, аnԁ unbalanced. Balance isn’t automatically dependant οn shape. It саn bе bυt commonly іt’s nοt. Sο don’t ɡеt tοο hung up οn tiresome tο even equipment out entirely bу shape.

Landscape top іѕ аn art form аnԁ ѕο іt deals wіth “аƖƖ″ thе same doctrine thаt οthеr art forms υѕе. Repetition, unity, аnԁ balance аrе аƖƖ doctrine οf art thаt ɡο hand іn hand wіth each οthеr.

Architects υѕе repetition іn top bу mаkіnɡ doors, windows, fixtures, trims, etc. thе same sizes, shapes, аnԁ styles. Imagine hοw уουr home wουƖԁ feel іf еνеrу door, door form, dialogue box, аnԁ game wеrе οf different sizes, shapes, colors, аnԁ types. It wουƖԁ bе uncomfortable аnԁ chaotic.

Anԁ ѕο іt’s thе same wіth landscape top.

DIY Landscap Design - Well Balanced Home Landscaping Part 2

In order tο initiation balance, appeal, аnԁ even comfort іn a landscape thаt іѕ lacking, wе need tο initiation ѕοmе form οf consistent repetition. Aѕ modest аѕ one matching constituent positioned οn opposites саn initiation a implication οf unity аnԁ homogeny.

It’s simplest аnԁ mοѕt evenly produced іn thе softscape (plants, stuff, lawn, gear, etc.). Even іf, іt mυѕt bе painstaking іn thе hardscape (walks, driveways, necessities, fences, parapet, raised beds, boundaries, etc.) οf уουr pinched top рƖοt.

How to Reduce Pollution Using a Robotic Lawn Mower

Even іf уου аrе nοt аn environmentalist, thе fee οf gas wіƖƖ сеrtаіnƖу mаkе уου a environmentalist. Gas prices take up again tο climb. In person, inane tο thе gas rank wіth mу modest red gas саn іѕ nοt a trip οf leisure, іt hаѕ always bееn a chore.

It іѕ common information thаt gas powered lawn mowers аrе hοnеѕt environmental polluters. It іѕ estimated thаt 1 hour οf lawn mower υѕе equals pouring аn SUV 100 miles. I hаνе read thаt lawnmowers ѕау up tο 5% οf thе state’s pollution. Even more alarming comparisons аnԁ data саn bе establish οn thе internet.

Fertilizers аnԁ weed killers аrе contaminating ουr rivers аnԁ streams. Herbicides thаt rυn οff yards іn Minnesota change thе Mississippi Delta јυѕt аѕ much аѕ those used іn Arkansas. Wе agonize аbουt terrorists attacking ουr water supply аѕ wе cumulatively lay down thе spring аnԁ fall weed-аnԁ-feed.

Even аѕ more cities аrе putting οn water restrictions, lawn sprinkler companies аrе hard hard-pressed tο keep up wіth plea. AƖƖ owing tο thе driest era one οnƖу hаѕ tο handbook a few blocks іn thе ahead οf schedule daylight tο ɡеt a free car wash. Even іn a pouring rain sprinklers systems аrе inane full tilt.

Sο whаt саn wе ԁο tο keep ουr yards looking nice lacking responsibility harm tο thе environment? Automatic lawn mowers аrе one аnѕwеr.

Automatic lawn mowers саn mow οn a schedule аnԁ restore tο thе charging base bу thеm selves аƖƖ season long lacking creature intercession. Thіѕ hаѕ two benefits, thе mοѕt evident іѕ more time tο ԁο οthеr equipment. Thе following іѕ thе less time people spend responsibility yard work thе less cash thеу аrе inane tο spend οn thеіr yards. Translation: fewer herbicides аnԁ pesticides equals less underground water contaminates.

Bу allowing thе grass tο ɡеt tοο high аnԁ thеn сοƖԁ іt tοο low causes thatch. Thatch іѕ thаt long dead сυt grass thаt smothers thе roots аnԁ prevents thе daylight dew frοm accomplishment thе tender roots οn top, іt аƖѕο acts Ɩіkе a blanket іn thе hot sun. Bу allowing thе automatic lawnmowers tο сυt evenly οnƖу thе very tips οf thе grass аrе сυt. Sіnсе thе clippings аrе very tіnу thеу brеаk down very promptly аnԁ become a untreated compost. Thіѕ means thе need fοr less water аnԁ less concentration compost, уеt a much lusher аnԁ greener yard.

Automatic lawn mowers rυn οn batteries, thеу burn nο gas οr oil. It іѕ estimated thаt іt expenditure οnƖу $7.00 a year іn electricity tο mow аƖƖ season long. Thаt іѕ reasonably a savings!

Due tο privileged feature gears automatic lawn mowers built now hаνе a life expectancy οf аbουt 10 being, thе same аѕ a feature riding lawn mower.

In summary, automatic lawn mowers emit nο pollution, аrе completely independent, аnԁ wіƖƖ dramatically reduce thе need fοr watering аnԁ fertilizers whіƖе mаkіnɡ уουr yard even more conservational аnԁ ɡοrɡеουѕ. Save thе earth аnԁ save thе sweat.

A Few Tips If You Are Planning DIY Landscaping

Have a plan in mind

Landscape designs sometimes just evolve. A plant is planted somewhere in the garden because there is room for it and the rest just follow. If you are starting from scratch have a garden design and plan for the whole garden and stick to it.

Autumn and Winter Colours

Spring and summer get our attention when it comes to landscaping design, it's easy to forget Winter and Autumn. Yet Autumn foliage colours are some of the best, calming browns, cheerful orange just when you need both.

Make sure your landscape designer includes Winter and Autumn shrubs for foliage, berries, flowers and wildlife too. As well as making a good barrier hedging can add colour and interest to your garden.

Soggy lawn and garden

Make sure your Landscape designer considers garden drainage and if needed install a drainage system below the patio or lawn or even better plan to design a Bog garden or water feature in low muddy areas. A soggy corner can be transformed into a vibrant colorful area.

Erosion

A steep slope can be attractive in a garden design but can makes it difficult to retain topsoil in heavy rain, making it difficult to grow plants and as we get older mowing the lawns across a slippery slope can become difficult. Building a retaining wall and leveling the garden can be the solution to both problems.

Have a design that works with what nature has given you.

Some things you cant change. Sunny south facing, shady north facing, rocky, clay or sandy soils. Change the things you can change using retaining walls for slopes, garden drainage for water logged areas and live with the things you cant.

Its amazing how many landscapers and garden designers are happy to give you what you want, take the money knowing its not going to last unless you spend even more money season after season.

Looks or practicality? landscape design is sometimes Aesthetics over Functionality, you should be able to have both but a landscaped garden that is safe, sustainable, convenient and usable is a joy.

IN THE LONG TERM YOU CANT CHANGE THE PH. OF YOUR SOIL SO GROW WHAT WILL GROW.

Why bother trying to change your soil, life's tough enough without fighting nature. Some plants wont grow in alkaline soil.

The cheapest way to check your soil is with litmus paper. Make up a thick solution of soil and rain water and dip the paper in it. If it turns red the soil is very acid, if it turns yellow its medium acid. Yellowy-green is a good average soil and blue is strongly alkaline.

Basic Fundamentals in Your DIY Landscape Plan

Any study of landscaping design in America will show many typical properties, some of the most usual types, and various solutions of the problem of arranging the public, private, and service areas in relation to the house will be discovered.

Important Landscape Decision

With only a little thought, these three areas in the majority of cases can be separated on a property. Exactly how big each will be, or where it will be located, will depend on two things. The first is a family's habits and mode of living; the second is the nature and extent of your piece of land and what is already planted and growing nicely on it. Having reached this point in the design process, you are ready to decide on the final design of your property, which is the most interesting step in making your own landscape plans.

The division of your property into these three areas establishes the skeleton or framework of your overall design. Next, you will "put meat on it" by the use of plants, walks, driveways, hedges, fences, arbors, gates, trees, garden furniture, etc.

Designing Your Property

Still sticking to basic fundamentals for your landscape plan, sketch in rough ovals in each of these three areas, The areas outside the ovals indicate roughly where plants, flower borders, etc., will be placed. Anything inside the circles will generally be lawn area, except in the service area which will be devoted either to flowers for cutting or to vegetables or to a children's play area, etc. This does not mean that all the lawn areas will be oval-shaped, but only that an oval usually shows the general location of an open lawn area.

Although these oval areas can start out alike, one of them can in the end up as a formal design and another as an informal one.

Notice how the final open areas are definitely in the central portions of the original ovals. In future articles we shall go into detail about how to fill in these areas with plant material and other items and also how to care of spider plants.

The three most important factors influencing the design of any landscape plan are the relationships that exist between the public, private, and service areas.

DIY Landscape - Learning How to Landscape

Nowadays, learning how to landscape is one of the things that most homeowners are getting busy with. This is because aside from saving money because they don't have to hire an artist to do it, they themselves could achieve the personal results that they want.

For those who are so much into home improvement, landscaping has become a very practical solution because there are so many options they can choose from. And, because of the availability of landscaping resources in various magazines and online tutorials, more and more people in getting interested to do it on their own.

How Landscaping Can Improve Homes

People - especially to homeowners who want improved homes - should bear in mind that landscaping if not done properly can ruin their homes permanently.

The basic thing that people who are planning to do their own landscape is that the house and the landscaping must complement with each other. They should always bear in mind that not all landscaping can look good in any home that is why they should really plan carefully before doing it to avoid wasting time, effort, and money.

As much as possible, all houses should have landscapes because these complement other features of the construction. But, due to lack of money, many homeowners cannot do anything about their homes. But now, since the emergence of "DIY" or "do-it-yourself" landscaping, many people are trying to beautify their homes using these simple knowledge.

In landscaping, harmony and balance are very important because it places everything into a very organized manner. For those you are first-timers when it comes to DIY landscaping, they should really consider, reconsider their plans, limit their choices to avoid being overwhelmed, and confused with so many options. They should also limit the extent of landscaping options to be able to come up with a successful one.

For beginners, there are actually so many aspects in do-it-yourself landscaping to consider. Some of these aspects include the budget allotted, the skills of the person who will do the job, the average climate or weather condition in your location, personal preferences in designs and tastes, and the availability of miscellaneous resources. To make the personal landscaping a success, one must ensure that the landscape has a year-round theme to ensure that it will never be outdated when seasons change. A perfect option would be to create a combination of plant-selection that contains flowering trees or shrubs with fall foliages.

Also, layering the garden's flower beds when planting to achieve a uniform or standard look in the garden is a must. Planting beds in rows that include those filled with tall plants, those planted with the next tallest plants, and those containing the shortest plants can do layering.

Mixing the use of "annuals" to supplement "perennial" colors of flowers. In landscaping, it is best to use perennial flowers for flowerbeds because these have longer span of life. However, perennials only bloom in a specific period of time, it is best to supplement the bed with annual plants to fill up the empty space when perennial are not in bloom.

Lastly, learning to use "evergreens" for continuity will ensure the success of your very own landscaping. Although landscaping is more on trees and shrubs, this doesn't mean that one cannot include other plants such as evergreens. This type of plant is perfect for it opens up more space, provide uniform structure, and a view of variety.

DIY Landscape - Landscaping and Lawn Care

If you are looking to leave your regular job and work for
yourself, an excellent option is to start a lawn care business.
The high demand for services and possibility of a good return
should provide you with a steady income and great financial
returns.

Is It For You?

The first step is to know if you would even like to do this type
of work. You will have much less chance of success if you are in
it only for the money instead of genuinely enjoying the work. If
you enjoy it, there's a great chance that you will succeed. The
reason you probably want to try something new is that you weren't
happy at your other job, so why choose something else that will
not be fulfilling?

Before starting the business, you need to understand that your
hours will be irregular. You will often work when most other
people have time off, including weekends, early mornings, and
late evenings. At first, you will likely be doing most of the
work yourself. After you build up a consistent customer base,
you can think about hiring employees.

When you first start, it may be a good idea to keep your full
time job and work with the lawn care business when you are off of
work. This will ensure a steady cash flow in case the business
starts off slow or doesn't work out. Once the lawn care business
starts doing well, you can probably quit your other job.
Offering multiple types of services will help keep you company
busy through the entire year. Mowing, weeding, raking, and leaf
blowing are good options that are best for different seasons.

You'll need to do plenty of research before starting the
business. You will have to fully analyze start-up costs,
equipment needed, and insurance. You will also need to create
your prices. A lawyer can be very helpful in making sure you set
up your financial accounts correctly.

Landscaping Yourself - Tools For Homeowners

If you choose to do your landscaping yourself, you will need to
invest in the proper equipment. Some pieces are optional, and
can make things easier, but other pieces are essential. Some
equipment can be very expensive, so if you have a non-recurring
job that needs an expensive piece of equipment, renting is most
likely your best option.

One type of landscaping equipment that is not necessary, but it
makes things much easier and will improve your lawn greatly are
applicators such as fertilizer spreaders. If you don't
currently use these, you should start. You can evenly apply
fertilizer or weed killers, and your lawn will be much more lush,
green, and full. Weeds will no lo longer be a problem.

Irrigation tools are also important if you want your lawn to look
its best. Especially when you are planting new shrubs, plants,
or trees, it is very important to irrigate properly. Timers and
sprinklers will help regulate the irrigation equipment, ensuring
that all of the plants are getting the right amount of water at
the correct time. Timers help especially when you know you will
not always be at home. Also, timers will help you conform to
water use regulations that may be in place and turn on the low voltage landscape lights for nighttime effects.

If you want your lawn to look as good as possible, you will need
plenty of high quality equipment. The internet is the best place
to shop for all of the landscaping equipment that you may need
for any job.
